Book of Mormon II - Day 6

Thought:  “I have rejoiced during the past six or seven weeks in reading carefully through, at the rate of about ten pages a day, with a prayerful heart, the Book of Mormon. I do not think that I have ever before enjoyed that book so much. I do not think the wonderful testimonies contained in it regarding the divine mission of the Savior, have ever made a more profound impression upon my heart and soul than they have made this last time that I have read the Book of Mormon. I remember, and have often spoken of the fact of reading it in my youthful days, and how there came into my heart an abiding testimony that the book was true, that it was in very deed exactly what it purports to be—the sacred history of the forefathers of the American Indian. I could not as a child or as a young man, comprehend and understand as fully as today the splendid discourses regarding the divine mission of the Savior. His wonderful teachings to the people upon this continent, the wonderful inspired teachings of Alma and Abinadi and many others, as contained in that book. But I am thankful beyond expression that I did read the book in my boyhood days and that the assurance came into my heart that it was in very deed the truth, and that I fell in love with the character of Nephi. …“I rejoice in the increased testimony that has come into my heart and soul regarding the divinity of the Book of Mormon, in the reading that I have just completed.” (HJ Grant CR, Apr. 1924, pp. 157–59.)                                                  Books of the Week: Third Nephi-The Fifth Gospel-Skinner  -  BoM Reference Companion-Largey   - gospeldoctrine.com       BookofMormonOnline.Net

Helaman 7 -

Vs. 1-3 - An RM in town whose mission did not go well.

Vs. 4-5 - A description of Nephi's day or is it a description of our day?

Vs. 6-7 - This is the Nephi of chapter 5! - When would you rather live?

Vs. 10 - Nephi pours out his "whole soul" unto God. See also 1 Nephi 1:5; Enos 3-4; Mosiah 24:10-15 (Alma's people under Amulon) and Mosiah 26:13-20 (Alma as a Priesthood leader)

Vs. 29 - A definition of a testimony.

Helaman 8 -

Vs. 4 - The conundrum of the Robbers

Vs. 27-28 - A pretty cool prophecy.

Helaman 9 - A great story

Helaman 10 -

Vs. 2 - Pondering: 1 Nephi 11:1; D&C 76:19; D&C 138:11; JSH 1:11-12 “We all do a lot of studying, but most of us don’t do much meditation. We don’t take time to think. I’d like to suggest that next fast day . . . everybody in this hall set aside an hour or two. Sit by yourself. Go in the bedroom and lock the door. Go out in the yard under a tree. Go in your study if you have one and shut the door, and think about yourself and your worthiness. Read from this great book [Book of Mormon]…There’s a great word that’s used, ‘ponder.’ “’Ponder.’

What do we mean by ‘ponder’? Well, I think it simply means kind of quietly thinking things through. Ponder what you have read. Ponder your life. Are you worthy, are you living the commandments…?” (Church News, 01/06/96)

Vs. 5 - It was quite a promise given to Nephi. Are such promises available to people like us? Look at these scriptures; 1 John 3:21-22; Enos 1:12; Dd&C 46: 30; 50:29-30. and this powerful statement by MG Romney, “The time will come when we shall know the will of God before we ask. Then everything for which we pray will be ‘expedient.’ Everything for which we ask will be ‘right.’ That will be when as a result of righteous living, we shall so enjoy the companionship of the spirit that he will dictate what we ask. On this point the Lord has said, ‘He that asketh in the Spirit asketh according to the will of God; wherefore it is done even as he asketh’ (D. & C. 46:30), and again, ‘And if ye are purified and cleansed from all sin, ye shall ask whatsoever you will in the name of Jesus and it shall be done. But know this, it shall be given you what you shall ask.’ (D. & C. 50:29-30.) Nephi, the son of Helaman, so lived. He with unwearyingness declared the word of God. He sought not his own life but the will of God, and to keep his commandments continually, and to him the Lord said, ‘. . . all things shall be done unto thee according to thy word, for thou shalt not ask that which is contrary to my will.’ (Helaman 10:5.)” (Conference Report, Oct. 1944, p. 56)

Vs. 16 - Nephi was protected and conveyed. Moses 1:1-2; 2 Nephi 4:25; Ezekiel 40:2; JST Matthew 4:4, 8; Revelation 21:10

Helaman 11 -

Vs. 22-23 - Note that the first problem that came up was "doctrinal contention".  Was there a correlation between knowing doctrine and receiving revelation

Helaman 12 - Mormon's timeout!

Vs. 14 - See TPJS p. 118-119-footnote

Vs. 25 - Would I that ALL men might be saved?

Helaman 13 -

Vs. 7 - Samuel's message was a happy one-given him by an angel- just like King Benjamin- but..

Vs. 8 "The Spirit, when withdrawn, will make it difficult for you to pray, difficult for you to have direction and guidance, difficult for you to withstand evil...I hope you haven't come to that state, but if you are not careful and this experience is repeated again, with each repetition there comes a diminishing of the Spirit until you, like they (2 Nephi 26:11), will have lost not only the power of the Holy Ghost, but also the Light of Christ." (HBLee, BYU Speeches, Oct. 1956 p. 6-7)

Vs. 25-28 - See 2 Timothy 4:3-4

Helaman 14 -

Vs. 2-7 - Four signs of Christ's birth

Vs. 13 - The thoughtful student of scripture must be aware that it is one thing to believe in Christ and quite another to “believe on his name.” To believe in the name of Christ is here announced as embracing repentance from all our sins; whereas one may profess to believe in Christ and yet not have abandoned sin.  There are certain prerequisites to believing on the name of Christ: First, the acceptance of Christ and the willingness to be a witness of him at all times and in all things and in all places (see Mosiah 18:9). Second, the acceptance of the gospel of Jesus Christ. This precludes the right to pick and choose, to sort out the doctrines that could bring inconvenience and social embarrassment. Third, the acceptance of those who have been commissioned to represent the Lord; that is, to sustain and uphold his anointed servants. And fourth, to sustain and be loyal to that Church upon which he has placed his name and within which is found the authority to perform the ordinances of salvation. (DCBM 3:411)

Vs. 16 - want to speak a word or two in relation to another death, which is a more terrible death than that of the body. When Adam, our first parent, partook of the forbidden fruit, transgressed the law of God, and became subject unto Satan, he was banished from the presence of God and was thrust out into outer spiritual darkness. This was the first death. Yet living, he was dead—dead to God, dead to light and truth, dead spiritually; cast out from the presence of God; communication between the Father and the son cut off. He was as absolutely thrust out from the presence of God as was Satan and the hosts that followed him. That was spiritual death. But the Lord said that He would not suffer Adam nor his posterity to come to the temporal death until they should have the means by which they might be redeemed from the first death, which is spiritual. Therefore angels were sent unto Adam, who taught him the Gospel and revealed to him the principle by which he could be redeemed from the first death, and be brought back from banishment and outer darkness into the marvelous light of the Gospel. He was taught faith, repentance and baptism for the remission of sins, in the name of Jesus Christ, who should come in the meridian of time and take away the sin of the world, and was thus given a chance to be redeemed from the spiritual death before he should die the temporal death. Now, all the world today, I am sorry to say, with the exception of a handful of people who have obeyed the new and everlasting covenant, are suffering this spiritual death. They are cast out from the presence of God. They are without God, without Gospel truth, and without the power of redemption; for they know not God nor His Gospel. In order that they may be redeemed and saved from the spiritual death which has spread over the world like a pall, they must repent of their sins, and be baptized by one having authority, for the remission of their sins, that they may be born of God. That is why we want these young men to go out into the world to preach the Gospel. While they themselves understand but little perhaps, the germ of life is in them. (Joseph F. Smith, Conference Report, Oct. 1899, p. 72)

Vs. 20-28 - 7 signs of His death.

Helaman 15 -

Vs. 3-4 - Hate is an idiomatic expression meaning to "love less." (Ogden, p. 107)

Helaman 16 -

Vs. 22 - See "The cancer of contention, CR, April 1989" RMNelson.

"It is not important that a prophet should say those things with which you and I are in full accord. But it is important that you and I should bring ourselves into full accord with those things which a prophet speaks by virtue of his office and calling." (RLEvans, On Being a Prophet, p. 672)
