Book of Mormon - Day 12

Book of Mormon Day Twelve

A. Thought- How are we to use it? We must first read it and gain a testimony for ourselves. Men may deceive each other, but God does not deceive men. Therefore, the Book of Mormon sets for the best test for determining its truthfulness--namely, read it and then ask God if it is true. (Ezra Taft Benson, CR Oct., 1984, p. 5)

D. 29 Things I know and love from Mosiah 6-16.

1. Quick chapter reviews 7-25

2. Mosiah 7:13-16 - What a seer does

3. 10:12 - False traditions - Examples? - Historical? Anti-Mormon? Within our Church? Family?

4. 11:2 - Designs of evil men (D&C 89:4)

5. 11:8-15 - An earmark of false religion is its attempt to hide its emptiness in such things as pomp and ceremony, grandeur and elegance. The purpose of great and spacious buildings, ornate in decor, is to create a sense of reverence and awe that otherwise would be lacking. Gold & silver, silks and scarlets, magnificent treasures of art and craftsmanship, buildings of enormous size and expense-such are the trappings of the kingdoms of the world and the cloak of the god of that which is worldly. (DCBM 2:201-2)

6. Abinadi- What's in a name?

7. 11:27 - Good question and a bad question - See Moses 5:16 and Pharaoh Exodus 5:2

8.  Mosiah  12:6 - The winds as symbols.

9. 12:13 - Was this a sincere question? How could it have been? (2 Nephi 15:20; Isaiah 5:20)

10. 12:20-24- See Mosiah 15:14-19

11: 12:27 - "The heart is the core of life and strength. In the ancient world it included the mind, spirit, and soul-one's entire emotional and mental makeup.  See Proverbs 23:7; Alma 5:13-14.

12. 13:5 - Michelangelo’s Moses is depicted with horns on his head. He, like so many artists before him, were laboring under a misconception? This is believed to be because of the mistranslation of the Hebrew Scriptures into Latin by St Jerome. Moses is actually described as having "rays of the skin of his face", which Jerome in the Vulgate had translated as "horns". The mistake in translation is possible because the word "keren" in the Hebrew language can mean either "radiated (light)" or "grew horns".

13. 13:30 - the purpose of the Law of Moses.

14. Mosiah 14 - "Surely the most sublilme, the lengthiest and most lyrical declaration of the lilfe, death, and atoning sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ is that found in the 53rd chapter of Isaiah, quoted iln its entirety in the Book of Mormon by Abinadi as he stood in chains before King Noah. Abinadi was, of course, a prefiguration, a type and shadow of the Savior, a fact that makes his moving tribute to Chrisrt even more powerful and poignant (if that is possible) than when Isaiah wrote.(Holland, Christ and the New Covenant, p. 89)

15. How is Christ the Father: See Promised Messiah p. 9; Doctrines of Salvation 1:29-30; Verse by Verse p. 197 & 354; DCBM 2:225-230, A Companion to Your Study of the Book of Mormon p. 183-4)

16. Mosiah 16:9 - How Christ is the Light and Life of the World.

17. Mosiah 17:8 - Why was Abinadi put to death?

18. Mosiah 18 - Mosiah was baptized and held the Priesthood before the coming of Abinadi. (Doctrines of Salvation 2:336-7)

19. 18:8-9 - what we promised when we were baptized.

20. 18:23 - Our observance or non-observance of the Sabbath is an unerring measure of our attitude toward the Lord personally and toward his suffering...It is a sign whether we are Christians in very deed or whether our conversion is so shallow that commemoration of his atoning sacrifice means little or nothing to us (Mark E. Peterson CR- April 1975. p. 72)

21. What can justify war? Alma 43:9, 26,  30, 45-50; 44:5; 46:12; 48:10, 24.

22. Mosiah 20 - See Judges 19-21

23. Mosiah 21:33 - The Book of Mormon makes it very clear that we must have authority to administer in the ordinances of the gospel.

24. Notice who is NOT mentioned in this chapter.

25. Mosiah 23:36-37 - A broken promise. Rare in the Book of Mormon!

26. Mosiah 24:9 - Liken this unto us.

27. 24:15 - Who are the happy people?

28. Mosiah 26: 5-6 - Joseph F. Smith said around the turn of the last century that there were 3 things which he felt threatened the Church members. 1.False Educational Ideas. 2. Sexual Immorality and 3. The flattery of prominent individuals.

29. Mosiah 26:228, 29, 30, 32, 36 - church discipline
