Books of the Week: Unlocking
the Old Testament, Victor L. Ludlow and
400 Questions & Answers about the Old Testament, Susan Easton Black.
Joshua: "Joshua, whose name means 'Jehovah is salvation,'
was the son of Non (Noon), an Ephraimite (1 Chr. 7:27). He was named Oshea
(Hoshea), signifying 'saved.' before Moses changed his name to Joshua (Num.
13:16). The Greek form of the name, Iesous, became Jesus in English. He was born
about the time Moses fled to Midian. He labored as a slave in Egypt before the
Exodus. Joshua joined the exodus from Egypt and became one of 12 spies sent
from the camps of Israel to the land of Canaan. He was one of two spies to
survive 40 years of wandering in the wilderness and he entered Canaan (Num.
14:30) Joshua was publicly ordained the successor of Moses in front of a
congregation. Before Moses departed, Joshua received his charge from the Lord to
lead the Israelites into the promised land (Num. 27:18-23). He was the military
leader who conquered Jericho and other towns, breaking the power of the
Canaanites. The land he conquered was sparse in vegetation, just as the
Israelites had been warned. It was not like Egypt, where 'you sowedst thy seed,
and wateredst it with thy foot, as a garden of herbs' (Dt. 11:10)." (Black
p. 93-94)
The Book of Joshua, the 1st of the
historical books is a sequel to the Pentateuch much like the Book of Acts is a
sequel to the Gospels. What is the longest you have ever waited
for anything?
It's not
enough to leave Egypt-You've got to enter the promised land. - How does that
apply to us?
1- A guide for accepting Church
callings Vs. 5, 7, 8, 9, 16, 18 - How
would you like to replace Moses?
Vs. 4- Not
until David and Solomon- 200 years later did this happen
Vs. 7-8- The
prophet told to search the scriptures daily. Vs. 10-15-Joshua's charge to
Israel.
2- Why would good Israelite spies go
stay with an harlot?
"Rahab may not have been a
harlot. The Hebrew word used for harlot is zonah,
which is from the same root ass mazon
meaning food. A more correct translation might be to call her a woman of zonah or food, that is a woman
innkeeper. Ancient inns often did provide harlots. However, Just because a
woman operated a tavern or inn did not necessarily mean she was a
prostitute." (Ludlow p. 55)
The student
manual refers to her as a repentant harlot. See also Hebrews 11:31.
3:4- Sabbath day's journey
was supposed to be a distance of 2,000 cubits, or less than half-a-mile, the
distance to which, according to Jewish tradition, it was allowable to travel on
the Sabbath day without violating the law (Acts 1:12; comp. Ex. 16:29; Num.
35:5; Josh. 3:4).
Vs.
13&15- You gotta get your feet wet!
Vs.
17- They passed over on the 1st day of Passover (4:19)
How
many Israelites are crossing the Jordan? "George E. Mendenhall, taking the
Hebrew word eleph to mean a subsection of a tribe, then, by extension, a
military unit, rather than the numerical unit 'one thousand.' arrive at a total
of 5,550 men levied from the tribes for military duty in Numbers 1 and at 5,750
men levied for military duty from the tribes in the census list of Numbers 26. These
figures contrast with 603,550 men for Num. 1, and 601,730 for Num. 26" (Lundquist
in Jackson p. 227)
4- The Israelites left
historical marker of 12 stones from the river. Temple Square has one with a big
bird.5-
Vs. 1- A
great moral victory. They had only to conquer those people physically who were
already defeated mentally.
Vs. 2-9-
Circumcision updated.Vs. 12- Manna no more. Food stamps stopped after 12,000 days of freebies! (1 Nephi 17:28; Mosiah 7:19),
Vs. 13-15 - Captain of the Lord's host appeared to Joshua. (Joshua knelt and removed shoes)
6- Vs. 1- A siege.
Vs. 4, 6, 8, 13, 15, 16, The number 7 is significant in this chapter.
Vs. 18-19- Don't take stuff for yourselves.
Vs. 20-How did the walls fall? (D&C 59:21)
Vs. 25- Rahab is listed as a "possible" ancestor of Jesus.
7-A story to remind us of Acts 5- Ananias and Sapphira.
Vs. 6 - Alma 46
Vs. 7-26 -1 Nephi 4:13
Vs. 10-13- No one sins in Isolation (vs. 13) D&C 82:10*******
8-2nd attempt successful and they could keep the spoil.
Vs. 30-35 - Joshua followed the instructions given him in Dt. 27:11-26 announcing the blessings and cursings between the mountains of Ebal and Gerizim. Mt. Gerizim became the holy mountain for the northern tribes and by the Samaritans after the Babylonian Captivity when a large schism between the Samaritans and Judaism developed. Subsequently, in the Persian Period, the Samaritans built a temple there probably in the middle of 5th century BCE. The religious tension between the Jews and the Samaritans led to the temple on Gerizim being destroyed by either John Hyrcanus in the 2nd century BCE (according to Josephus) or by Simeon the Just (according to the Talmud). The mountain continued to be the holy place of the Samaritans, and is mentioned as such by the Gospel of John when Jesus visited there (John 4:3-42) Modern day Samaritans still celebrate the Passover on top of Mt. Gerizim.
9- Who made the biggest goof in this chapter, the Gibeonites or the Israelites? See vs. 14 & 15.
10-Joshua led the Israelites in defeating the combined 5 king led city-states. The Lord showed his involvement by prolonging the day (Vs. 12)and sending hail stones (vs. 11) which killed more Amorites than the Israelites had. See Helaman 12:13-17; D&C 29:14; 45:40-42; 88:87; 133:49 - that what the critic did not know-could not have been. Putting your foot on someone's neck was a sign of triumph and conquest.
Vs. 1 - Adoni-zedek
Vs. 28-43- The victories over the 5 nations took 5 days not 1 day
11:15- We do well when we leave nothing undone of all that the Lord commands. (See 13:1)
Vs. 21-22- The Anakims cut off here are the same "giants" or their descendants who scared off the spies sent out by Moses 40 years before. (Num. 13:33) Note that the Anakims of Gath were not conquered, which set up the David and Goliath story in 1 Sam. 17.
12-Here we get a list of the kings conquered by Moses and Joshua; 33 of them in an area 40-50 miles wide and 150 miles long. About the same distance as from the Capitol Building in Salt Lake to Fillmore.
11-13 - The Israelites were not successful in conquering the land of Canaan as they set out to do. Some of the most fertile parts of the country (then and now) remained unconquered until the days of David and Solomon. Unconquered lands included the area of the Philistines, the Jezreel Valley, Megiddo and Beth-shan. (Map 4)
14- 85 year old Caleb,"Give me this mountain!" You have got to love Caleb. SWK-(Ensign Nov. 79 p. 79)
15: 55 & 62 should be especially interesting to people in Utah.
16-17- Ephraim and Manasseh- See Bible Map 3
18- Tabernacle set up in Shiloh- Capital until Jerusalem
20- Cities of refuge- a little bit like a change of venue.
21:43-44- A summation of the conquest
22- A misunderstanding between friends. 2 1/2 tribes - It wasn't really an idolatrous altar.
23:7-12- warnings against 3 things. Vs. 7 social intercourse; Vs 7-11- worship their Gods; Vs. 12- Intermarriage. Joseph F. Smith in early 20th century warned against 1) False Educational ideas, 2) immorality and 3) the praise of the world. What would you warn the next generation against?
24:14-16
Vs. 27 - Can a stone be a witness? Plymouth Rock
"As the dust settles at the opening of the book of Judges, the Israelites had been pushed back into the spiny hill country of Judea and Samaria, while their enemies-primarily Philistines-occupied the coast, the valleys, both Jezreel and Jordan, and certain crucial cities. Thus Israel, during the period of the Judges, existed as a peasant farming culture in small villages (some of them fortified), while its Philistine adversaries controlled more prosperous cities, trade routes, and possessed technological advantages such as superior metal technology." (Lundquist p. 234)
