Thought:
When we believe or say we have been offended, we usually mean we
feel insulted, mistreated, snubbed, or disrespected. And certainly clumsy,
embarrassing, unprincipled, and mean-spirited things do occur in our interactions
with other people that would allow us to take offense. However, it ultimately
is impossible for another person to offend you or to offend me. Indeed,
believing that another person offended us is fundamentally false. To be
offended is a choice we make; it is not a condition inflicted or
imposed upon us by someone or something else. (David, CR Oct. 1006)

Revelation given
through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Kirtland, Ohio, March 1, 1832. On that
day, the Prophet and other leaders had assembled to discuss Church business.
This revelation originally instructed the Prophet, Sidney Rigdon, and
Newel K. Whitney to travel to Missouri and organize the Church’s
mercantile and publishing endeavors by creating a “firm” that would oversee
these efforts, generating funds for the establishment of Zion and for the
benefit of the poor. This firm, known as the United Firm, was organized in
April 1832 and disbanded in 1834 (see section 82). Sometime after its dissolution, under
the direction of Joseph Smith, the phrase “the affairs of the storehouse for
the poor” replaced “mercantile and publishing establishments” in the
revelation, and the word “order” replaced the word “firm.”

D&C 81 - Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Hiram,
Ohio, March 15, 1832. Frederick G. Williams is called to be a high priest
and a counselor in the Presidency of the High Priesthood. The historical
records show that when this revelation was received in March 1832, it called
Jesse Gause to the office of counselor to Joseph Smith in the Presidency.
However, when he failed to continue in a manner consistent with this
appointment, the call was subsequently transferred to Frederick G.
Williams. The revelation (dated March 1832) should be regarded as a step toward
the formal organization of the First Presidency, specifically calling for the
office of counselor in that body and explaining the dignity of the appointment.
Brother Gause served for a time but was excommunicated from the Church in
December 1832. Brother Williams was ordained to the specified office on March
18, 1833.
“March 8, 1832. Chose this day and ordained Brother
Jesse Gause and Brother Sidney to be my counselors of the ministry of the
presidency of the high priesthood . . .’ [spelling standardized].
“One week later, a revelation concerning Jesse Gause was
received by Joseph Smith, confirming Jesse in his work and giving further
direction in his office and calling. There are two manuscript copies of this
revelation extant. . . . In both of these Jesse Gause’s name has been
crossed out and Frederick G. Williams’ name written above it. Since that
time, all published copies of this revelation (Section 81 of the Doctrine and
Covenants) list Frederick G. Williams as the one to whom it is directed.
Since this revelation contains instructions, duties, and promised blessings to
the one called as counselor to the Prophet, the revelation was just as
appropriate for Frederick G. Williams as it was to Jesse Gause.
Jesse Gause was born in1785 in Pennsylvania. He married Martha Cuntry
before 1825. She died in 1828 leaving 5 children. He married Minerva in 1832. They had 1 child.
Jesse was a Quaker from 1806-1830 when he became a Shaker. He was baptized into
the LDS Church on Oct. 22, 1831 and was ordained a High Priest on March 8, 1832
and went to Jackson County with the prophet in April, 1832. On his return from
Missouri, he stopped to get his wife. She refused to join him. “Upon his
return to Kirtland, Jesse was called to serve a mission with Zebedee Coltrin.
They began their journey on 1 August 1832, and traveled until the 19th, at
which time Coltrin decided to return to Kirtland because of severe pains in his
head. After praying with and for each other, they parted. Jesse Gause continued
east and walked right out of the history of the Church, never again to return.
There appears to be no other record of the man either in or out of the Church. He was Ex'd on Dec. 3, 1832.
Vs. 2 - Presidency of Church is leadership over all members. Presidency
of High Priesthood is leadership over all Priesthood holders. Keys=the right to
preside.
“These keys are the right of presidency; they
are the power and authority to govern and direct all of the Lord’s affairs on
earth. Those who hold them have power to govern and control the manner in which
all others may serve in the priesthood. All of us may hold the priesthood, but
we can only use it as authorized and directed so to do by those who hold the
keys. “This priesthood and these keys were conferred upon Joseph Smith and
Oliver Cowdery by Peter, James, and John, and by Moses and Elijah and others of
the ancient prophets. They have been given to each man who has been set apart
as a member of the Council of the Twelve. But since they are the right of
presidency, they can only be exercised in full by the senior apostle of God on
earth, who is the president of the Church. “May I now say—very plainly and very
emphatically—that we have the holy priesthood and that the keys of the kingdom
of God are here. They are found only in The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints. “By revelation to Joseph Smith, the Lord said that these
keys ‘belong always unto the Presidency of the High Priesthood’ “Now, brethren,
I think there is one thing which we should have exceedingly clear in our minds.
Neither the President of the Church, nor the First Presidency, nor the united
voice of the First Presidency and the Twelve will ever lead the Saints astray
or send forth counsel to the world that is contrary to the mind and will of the
Lord. “An individual may fall by the wayside, or have views, or give counsel
which falls short of what the Lord intends. But the voice of the First
Presidency and the united voice of those others who hold with them the keys of
the kingdom shall always guide the Saints and the world in those paths where
the Lord wants them to be. . . .“I testify that if we shall look
to the First Presidency and follow their counsel and direction, no power on
earth can stay or change our course as a church, and as individuals we shall
gain peace in this life and be inheritors of eternal glory in the world to
come.” (Joseph Fielding Smith CR, Apr. 1972, pp. 98–99; or Ensign, July 1972, pp. 87–88.)
Vs. 6 - This
revelation to Frederick G. Williams is similar in some respects to a
patriarchal blessing, for it told him of special promises and blessings
reserved for him on the condition of his faithfulness and gave him specific
charges that would help him achieve these blessings. During the apostasy in
Kirtland in 1837, Frederick G. Williams became estranged from the Church.
A conference of elders in Far West refused to sustain him as a member of the
First Presidency, and at a conference in March 1839 he was excommunicated from
the Church. Happily, about a year later he appeared during a general conference
of the Church and “humbly asked forgiveness for his conduct [while in
Missouri], and expressed his determination to do the will of God in the future”
(History of the Church, 4:110). His petition was accepted, and he was
rebaptized soon afterwards. He died strong in the faith in Nauvoo in 1842.
D&C 82 - Revelation given to Joseph Smith the Prophet, in Independence,
Jackson County, Missouri, April 26, 1832. The occasion was a council of high
priests and elders of the Church. At the council, Joseph Smith was sustained as
the President of the High Priesthood, to which office he had previously been
ordained at a conference of high priests, elders, and members, at Amherst,
Ohio, January 25, 1832 (see the heading to section 75). This revelation
reiterates instructions given in an earlier revelation (section 78) to establish a
firm—known as the United Firm (under Joseph Smith’s direction, the term “order”
later replaced “firm”)—to govern the Church’s mercantile and publishing
endeavors.

"To return to sin is most destructive to the morale of the individual and
gives Satan another hand-hold on his victim. Those who feel that they can sin
and be forgiven and then return to sin and be forgiven again and again must
straighten out their thinking. Each previously forgiven sin is added to the new
one and the whole gets to be a heavy load. Thus when a man has made up his mind
to change his life there must be no turning back. Any reversal even in a small
degree, is greatly to his detriment." (SWK, Miracle of Forgiveness, p.
170.)
Vs. 10 - God

Vs. 13 -
First mention of Stake.
Vs. 19- “It
is verily true that before we can enter into the celestial kingdom we will have
to learn how to live in unity with the love of our fellows at heart, desiring
their good as well as our own, and not preferring ourselves before them. Here
the Lord gave to the Church the plan and the opportunity to prepare themselves
by obedience to celestial law. They failed, and the privilege to practice this
law of consecration had to be postponed because we were not able to esteem our
neighbor as ourselves.” (Joseph Fielding Smith, Church History and Modern
Revelation, 1:322.)

Vs. 23-

“The Church and its members are commanded by
the Lord to be self-reliant and independent. (See D&C 78:13–14.) “The responsibility for
each person’s social, emotional, spiritual, physical, or economic well-being
rests first upon himself, second upon his family, and third upon the Church if
he is a faithful member thereof. “No true Latter-day Saint, while physically or
emotionally able will voluntarily shift the burden of his own or his family’s
well-being to someone else. So long as he can, under the inspiration of the
Lord and with his own labors, he will supply himself and his family with the
spiritual and temporal necessities of life. (See 1 Timothy 5:8.)” (SWKimball CR, Oct.
77, p. 124; or Ensign, Nov. 77, pp. 77–78.)
D&C 84 -
Of all the holy agreements
pertaining to the gospel of Jesus
Christ,
few, if any, would transcend in importance the oath and covenant of the
priesthood. It is certainly one of the most sacred agreements, for it involves
the sharing of heavenly powers and man’s upward reaching toward eternal goals.
None of us can afford to be ignorant of the terms of this contract. To do so
might cause us to miss the mark in our performance
of duty and result in the forfeiture of promised blessings. Carlos Asay CR-Oct.
1985 p. 56-60)
The
Melchizedek Priesthood comes with an Oath and Covenant. The oath is on God’s
part, for he alone has the authority to swear oaths. The covenant is between
God and the priesthood holder. Those receiving the priesthood covenant to
magnify the office conferred upon them and to sustain those called to preside
over them. God covenants to accept the faithful priesthood holder as his heir
and thus make him equal in power, might and dominion. God’s promise-is so far
beyond the imagination of man, that God, to affirm the reality of it, seals it
with an oath. (McConkie & Ostler, Revelations

James Dee Harmston died June 28, 2013. Below is a Salt Lake Tribune
article from April 26, 1998, discussing him and his polygamous group, The
True and Living Church of Jesus Christ of Saints of the Last Days. • Jim
Harmston is a polygamist who calls Mormons ``morons’’ and swears he will turn
LDS Church leader Boyd K. Packer black. He
acknowledges that one of his wives is a teen-ager, but gloats that ``she’s
the most cuddling little thing you ever saw in all your life.’’ (TLC), is
headquartered in a tidy bright-red brick building across from City Hall in
Manti, a central Utah city of 3,000. Some in his flock have strayed — all the
way into 6th District Court, where they hope to convince a jury Harmston
duped them out of more than $250,000, then failed to deliver Jesus Christ in
the living flesh as they were promised. But if Harmston is unhappy, he isn’t
talking. ``You won’t get a single soul inside this church that will talk to
you until we’re ready to deal with the issue in the courts,’’ says Harmston,
a 57-year-old ex-Realtor who moved to Manti from the Wasatch Front earlier
this decade. Read also "Several Men Claim to be the One Mighty and

Article
by Paul H. Peterson in Encyclopedia of Mormonism- Joseph Smith's
Civil War prophecy is contained in sections 87 and 130 of the Doctrine
and Covenants. He prophesied on December 25, 1832, that a war would begin
in South Carolina; that the southern states would divide against the northern
states; that the South would seek support from other nations, including Great
Britain; and that the war would lead to the death and misery of many souls.
These items in the prophecy were all fulfilled in the Civil War (1860-1865). In
1843 the Prophet noted (D&C 130:12-13) that he had also learned by
revelation in 1832 that slavery would be the probable cause of the upcoming
crisis. These matters are all history now, but certain verses in the Civil War
prophecy have broader applications and it appears that portions of the
revelation are yet to be fulfilled. Section 87 was not published by the Church
until 1851 and was not canonized until 1876. It was, however, copied and
circulated by some Church leaders and missionaries in the 1830s. The Civil War
prophecy became one of the most widely published revelations in the Doctrine
and Covenants. Not surprisingly, it received greatest attention during the
Civil War, as many viewed the conflict as a vindication of the prophetic powers
of Joseph Smith."Bibliography

In
1828 in response to the so-called "Tariff of Abominations", the State
of South Carolina passed an Ordinance of Nullification which claimed;
1)Sovereignty resided in the states. 2) The states had created the federal
government. 3) The states could decide if a law was constitutional. 4) If it
was not, the federal law could be declared null and void in that state.
D&C 88 -
Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet at Kirtland,
Ohio, December 27 and 28, 1832, and January 3, 1833. The Prophet designated it
as the “‘olive leaf’ … plucked from the Tree of Paradise, the Lord’s message of
peace to us.” The revelation was given after high priests at a conference
prayed “separately and vocally to the Lord to reveal his will unto us
concerning the upbuilding of Zion.”
Vs. 1 - 10 High Priests meeting in
the Newell K. Whitney store. Joseph Sr. Joseph Jr. Sidney, Orson Hyde, Hyrum,
Samuel, Newell K. Whitney, Frederick G. Williams (Recorder), Ezra Thayer, John
Murdock. All prayed vocally and separately on knees and then spoke.
Vs. 2 - Lord of Sabaoth=Lord of
Hosts. The footnote indicates this is the Book of Life where names, works and
prayers of faithful are recorded, but blotted out if they turn wicked. See
Revelation 13:8; 17:8; 22:19.
Vs. 3-4 - There are two Comforters spoken of. One is
the Holy Ghost, the same as given on the day of Pentecost, and that all Saints
receive after faith, repentance, and baptism. This first Comforter or Holy
Ghost has no other effect than pure intelligence. It is more powerful in
expanding the mind, enlightening the understanding, and storing the intellect
with present knowledge, of a man who is of the literal seed of Abraham, than
one that is a Gentile, though it may not have half as much visible effect upon
the body; for as the Holy Ghost falls upon one of the literal seed of Abraham,
it is calm and serene; and his whole soul and body are only exercised by the
pure spirit of intelligence; while the effect of the Holy Ghost upon a Gentile,
is to purge out the old blood, and make him actually of the seed of Abraham.
That man that has none of the blood of Abraham (naturally) must have a new
creation by the Holy Ghost. In such a case, there may be more of a powerful
effect upon the body, and visible to the eye, than upon an Israelite, while the
Israelite at first might be far before the Gentile in pure intelligence. (TPJS
